My father always told me to never underestimate anyone and don’t judge a book by its cover This advice from Mr Gelati comes into play with this novel Gar Fish Long Gravy Memoirs of Southern Sensibility The cover makes it appear to be a cook book of some kind but it is not this is a book that is going to take you into your heart and soul Check out the synopsis of this novel“Live More Laugh Much and Love OftenGrowing up poor in the small town of Vicksburg Miss Alexander Devereaux didn't have much But there was no lack of remarkable personalities each of whom left an indelible imprint on his life Gar Fish Long Gravy collects the stories insight tragedies and uproarious wit of an unforgettable cast of characters Meet Granmama Lia' whose hard won wisdom on life love and mistresses is dispensed to in her kitchen to her beloved grandson sometimes over Johnny Walker Black There's Ms Peaches who raises chickens in her ramshackle hut yet might be one of the richest people in town Big Daddy is an imposing hulk but his massive frame hides a vulnerable past and humiliating secret Ms Annie Laurie is a fabulously wealthy white woman who never had children of her own But her love rains down on young Alexander And that's just for startersBased on real life experiences Gar Fish Long Gravy is about the mistakes we make the loves we share and the stories we tell each other that make us who we are And it is the touching story of a boy who ultimately breaks free of the poverty and abuse of his extended family yet never forgets the important lessons he learned along the way As Grandmama said If sense were common everybody would have itOkay I think you got the point and the gist of the book all 76 pages of it Yes it is a possible to go through this uickly but there is too much to absorb to do that You are probably shaking your head and wondering why am I throwing a curve ball at you today I have had this novel for a little while just like I have had the previous book for a bit and believe it or not the next book I have had for a bit to I find for me that books of this ilk are best consumed in pieces not whole and at one time I like to look at the table of contents get the flavor of it hunt and peck a little and then get the true flavor of what it is trying to impart to me I think rip off chunks of it at different times until I have consumed and digested the entire thingGar Fish is a very nice book and one that I think is good to have It brought up points and pointed out things that I just gloss over in everyday life and has made me appreciate things that much This is a good time of year for this book but then again one could make the argument that this is a book that has no time of the year because common sense appreciating the right things are an everyday thing Check this book out and support Alexander Devereux What are you reading today? Upon reading the first page I was hooked I could not put the book down I was captivated because I found myself relating many of the characters to people in my own family and life Every page keeps the reader engaged in the action of the story and message of the chapter I laughed till my side ached and cried a river of tears because this book is an emotional roller coaster ride What I really love is how each chapter title is an actual uote from his grandmother It is obvious the author poured his heart out in this work and he did an excellent job transferring his grandmother's wisdom to the written word The book is unpredictable when you think you know what is about to happen it takes twist that you would have never expected This book is profoundly disturbing and alarming insightful I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to read and loves a terrific story line

CHARACTERS Gar Fish Long Gravy

At's just for starters Based on real life experiences Gar Fish Long Gravy is about the mistakes we make the loves we share and the stories we tell each other that make us who we are And it is the touching story of a boy who ultimately breaks free of the poverty and abuse of his extended family yet never forgets the important lessons he learned along the way As Grandmama said If sense were common everybody would have it Think back to age 9 or 10 Most of your friends were probably your own age You worried about who would be your friend and who wouldn't how much homework you had getting allowance money from your parents and all sorts of other nonsense You probably weren't exchanging life lessons with each other you were living in the moment Growing up in Vicksburg Miss 9 year old Alexander Devereux's friends weren't his age in fact most of them were 40 years old and up Looking at that in today's world that might seem strange but in our grandparents' era it was probably pretty normal Those friends and family members passed along a lot of sage advice to Devereux which he used to frame his book Gar Fish Long Gravy Memoirs of Southern Sensibility Devereux came from a time when everyone stuck with their own kind The rich with the rich and the poor with the poor After all why would you want to be with people who aren't like you But Devereux saw differently It's funny how a circumstances His Granddaddy was a creature of habit he always wore dress attire and had to have the same breakfast everyday And without fail he was verbally abusive to Lia But grandmamma Lia came from a time when women didn't divorce you found a way to deal with it While Devereux didn't agree with how grandmamma Lia dealt with her life he got the messageMs Peaches 60 was another sage adversary a deep understanding of Southern culture I wish the book was longer and had a wider age range for Devereux He certainly learned a lot at age nine including how to overcome childhood trauma you'll have
