For every body who ever wondered about why 99 percent of all HP h are virginal innocents this is the book to read It is a classic guardianward romance but with a lot of sexual tension thrown in Up until this point most guardianward romances resembled that classic book Daddy Long Legs A Comedy in Four Acts where the h falls in love with her guardianbenefactor and their relationship is fairly tame andor kinda deceptive as the h doesn't realize she has met her unknown guardian and is in love with him They usually included the h having a distant relationship with the HGuardian until she is old enough to be eligible for marriageThis book blows that trope out of the water as the h meets the H when she is three and he is 15 and visiting from his cattle station in Australia He tickles her and she doesn't like it so she bites him hard enough to draw blood The next time they meet she is four and he is 16 and he pulls her hair so she pinches him hard Thus the pattern of him teasing her and her antagonism is fairly well established They meet again when she is 13 with her first grown up hairstyle and he is 25 He messes up her hair again and she kicks him the shins and then he spanks her in front of everybody This completely destroys her 13 year old dignity and she avows eternal hate We all know where this one is going LOLThey finally meet again when she 17 almost 18 and her aunt uncle die She has been living with the aunt uncle and her female cousin as her parents died when she was two The female cousin is a witch and has always been jealous of the h The female cousin is married living in Canada and kicks the h out of the family home The uncle named the H the h's guardian until she is 20 and can handle the inheritance her parents left her The cousin recommends she get a job and support herself but the h is untrained and so decides she has to go to Australia as the H her guardian reuests For some reason it never occurs to her to get a college education and stay in school but I don't think education was a likely option for romance purposes back thenShe gets to the Australian Outback has the usual run in's with the H and firey kisses etc All is well until everyone around her remarks that the H brought her there to marry to expedite the ousting of his controlling aunt who is elderly and slowly becoming senile Then the evil OW wanna be cousin shows up and makes her play for the H This is where the definitive trope of most HP's for the next 60 years is established The innocent virginal but feisty h is pitted against the sophisticated glamorous but really witchy and married rival who is dead set on competing for the man Every time I read this I just wanna say to the evil cousin give in now woman and go home you're going to lose cause virginity is the magic HP get out clause to everything The evil cousin eventually abandons the h to die in the Outback but the virginity rule is now in play so there is a heroic rescue where the h almost makes it home to collapse gratefully in the arms of the adoring H who now hates the OW and will be in lurve and faithful for life and HEA I did like this one too even with the magic virgin clause it is still a fun read and even with passionate fiery kisses and the domineering arrogance of the H the h still manages to hold her own It also really does set the standards for the virginal h vs sophisticated lady getting the hunky H and while some of the physical shaking by the h seems a bit rough I also consider the standards of the day when freuently getting physical with the h was a prerogative of the H whoa betide anyone else who abused the h and used to symbolize the big passion they had going on since publishers and film maker's really did not show a lot of sex on screen or on the page in respectable mainstream mass market books and movies

The HP Triumvirate Boogenhagen StMargaret and Naksed have all done better reviews than I could do or care to I was intrigued by the described beginning where the three year old h bites the teen H Later she kicks him after he pulls her hair All signs of extreme love playground style Sadly she has one kick in the shins left at 13 and it’s all downhill from there into HP h spinelessness and gullibilityThe h was raised by her very sweet aunt and uncle who somehow managed to bear the cold hearted spawn of Satan The cousin has a crush on the H from the gitgo but marries some poor schmuck from Canada She refuses to take in the 17 year old heroine after her parents die but is dog in the manger enough to not want her to go the Australia where the H is Much older he is the designated guardian until the h turns 20 Outback station stuff happens including a barely there OW wannabe The most she does is comment on how young the heroine is Rookie mistake OW NEVER point out how young your competition is as in young and fresh when you are an old washed up hag in your 20s The heroine is 17 The H has started to put the moves on the heroine and she thinks he just may be in love It’s a watercolor dream andThe evil cousin leaves her husband and Canada because they are just too nice for her and heads for the Outback She is a pretty nasty piece of work She wants breakfast in bed she bats her eyes at the H and she lies to the heroine about the HLong story short after trying to entertain the evil cousin in the tiny town near the station they get lost The evil cousin ditches the h to die in the Outback of dehydration sun stroke and sunburnI have a hard time dealing with the fact that the heroine is 17 years old She goes from a firebrand pistol as a little girl to a character that is than a little passive about her life Margaret Way still rules the fictional Outback

Guardianward story set in the Outback I will let the other excellent reviews do the heavy lifting of all the spoilers and plot details Heroine is almost 18 Hero is 29 Just the right age to marry in 1973 when this was written Hero is actually a nice guy and shows his love for the heroine so much so that even our little ninny thinks he loves her until the OW heroine's cousin shows up to throw a spanner in the worksBut true love prevails when the OW leaves the heroine to die in the Outback and hero finds her He doesn't even scold her he just declares his love Margaret Way's heroes would not approve Outback Romance checklistLong journey to the stationBad roadsGracious manor houseCondescending views of the aboriginal residents at the stationPioneer historyFlora and Fauna descriptionsLocal danceWell stocked general store in townTour of Alice SpringsAyers Rock Motel has AC Small plane ridesAlas no flash floods or searing heat or smokos

I liked the beginning of the book the best when the author humorously sets up the background story of the two protagonists of this love story H and h meet when she is a three year old curmudgeon and he is already almost all grown up so right off the bat you know there is a considerable age difference Their three encounters are fiery to say the least with the antagonism between them leading to physical and emotional confrontations that were as comical as they were cringe inducing There are bites kicks and a public spankingWhen the action really starts off it takes us to the hero's vast station in the Australian outback and there it morphs into the typical Margaret Way Australian ranch romance with plenty of OWOM action Great Big Terrible Misunderstandings and of course life and death situations It felt a bit tired and played out for me because I have read so many Way books and she is for me the incomparable ueen of Australian cattle king romances but it would be than adeuate in general as a Harleuin romanceThe heroine irked me because of her TSTL and doormatty tendencies but I really liked the secondary characters like the once magnificent but painfully fading matriarch of the ranch and the heroine's best friend who turned up in Australia and fell in love herself becoming a fierce ranch woman in the process she should have been the heroine of the piece imho I also loved the mystical touch of the bramby a wild and untamed horse that kind of acts as the guardian angel of the heroineOverall it was nice if not terribly memorable

This book was a tame one from the author It's about a girl who loses her aunt and uncle after already losing her parents at the age of 2 or 3? and goes to live with a family friend who was picked by the uncle to be her guardian We got to see their history and the change in their relationship after she went to live with them This was a pretty mellow read with no deal breakers Oh except maybe that she was an immature 17 to his 29 when they got together There was a little OW angst and evil cousin and a big tadoo towards the end with a satisfying resolution If you want a thorough description of the Australian Outback then you've hit the jackpot because she went into minute detail of the plant and animal lifeSo not bad just keeps you waiting for something to happen

So Harleuin Presents Number 2 Maybe it would be fun to collect and read the first 100This book was slow and sweet HPs had not really settled into the groove that they eventually did with the tiaras and Italian villas etc This was a guardian and ward romance and we did get to see them interact a few times before the main action of the story starts and I always enjoy that You never got the feeling that he had loved her all along just that he fell in love with her when she came out to live with him when she was 17 and he was 29 or 30 This is a guy who if he had been written now would be a total alpha ass if not a BDSM dom He was veyry much in charge and it was his way or the highway and she spent a lot of time trying never to make him angry view spoiler considering he had spanked her in front of a bunch of people for kicking him when she was 13 and he was 25 hide spoiler
