characters The Blessing of Movement

Sandra Fearless headstrong and dominant her personality sets the stage for a family dynamic that will affect all members for the rest of their lives the youngest sister most of all Th Konrad’s story is an inspirational memoir about life with disability and caring for dying relatives Her sister Sandra became a uadriplegic in her twenties Throughout the book Konrad investigates the secret strength that underlay “the sunny disposition of the pretty paralyzed woman” She concludes that it was all about thankfulness as proven by Sandra’s gratitude journal Konrad’s own life undeniably gets sidelined though; self reflection would provide a good match for her insights into her sister’s characterSee my full review at Foreword

An flourish despite circumstances and motivates the reader to live their best life every day It is a story of family growth and the overwhelmingly powerful impact of unconditional lov Ms Konrad has a touching and powerful story to tell The tale itself is enthralling and her love for her family shines on every page Dealing with themes such as street life and family turmoil “The Blessing of Movement” could have very easily been depressing But it isn’t In fact it’s uite the opposite; a perfect balance of hope and sobering truth That’s in large part what kept me reading As a disabled woman myself mine is a genetic disease affecting my eyesight I was able to relate to some of the struggles Sandra would face I’m at least lucky enough to be going through this in a much open and accommodating era Sandra struggles and tries and there are up’s and down’s that are so gut wrenchingly real it hurt Through it all she can still smile and that is so important to coping with a disability And Deborah Konrad relates those struggles in a very real non sugar coated light even when she easily could have There’s something unexpectedly refreshing when an author is upfront about her own biases and perspectives Ms Konrad is such an author and I appreciated her willingness to admit when she didn’t recall or didn’t know a particular detail on something For me that honesty added to rather than detracted from her story “The Blessing of Movement” has touches that I always like to see in motivational or memoiric tales such as photos of the Smith family sprinkled throughout This was a nice touch and provided another level of relatability to their story It would have been interesting to see some of the documents Ms Konrad hinted at but I didn’t really feel the lack as she did an excellent job of relating the informationWhile the premise of this story is fascinating and touching there were a number of things that kept me from giving it 5 stars I encountered editorial issues that another read through by the author or her editor could polish out nitpicky but distracting all the same Also there are times when the foreshadowing is rather heavy handed This is especially true with the multiple mentions of Sandra’s hatred of having her hair washed and Ms Konrad’s speculation that this might have been a warning sign of psychological problems in her sister This became tedious after a time The narrative tends to jump around in both time and subject and I found myself having to reread a few passages to try and figure out the transition There often wasn’t one I also began to note the overuse of terms such as “yet” and “in retrospect” which was distracting Bottom line This is a lovely inspirational read and a polished finish would do it justice If you’re looking for a tale of what it means to be human and part of a family with all its triumphs and flaws and struggles I would highly recommend giving this your attention Rebels in Rajasthan (Adventures of the Flying Jharokha) the reader Red Sun to live Dance Like a Man: A Stage Play in Two Acts their best life every day It is a story of family growth and Red Sun the overwhelmingly powerful impact of unconditional lov Ms Konrad has a Middle India: Selected Short Stories touching and powerful story Emperor to A Family Affair: India Under Three Prime Ministers tell The My days in Prison tale itself is enthralling and her love for her family shines on every page Dealing with Hanuman: An Introduction themes such as street life and family The Bengalis: A Portrait of a Community turmoil “The Blessing of Movement” could have very easily been depressing But it isn’t In fact it’s uite No More Questions: The Final Travels of U.G. E complex relationship between these two sisters spans over forty years of events and results in a final act of redemption restoration and forgiveness The story demonstrates how one c This book was reviewed for Online Book ClubKonrad's The Blessing of Movement is the a poignant look at life at family and at the impact we have on people be it from closeness or in a brief passing by This is the story of her sister Sandra and the ripples left from contact with this fierce bright woman This story spans decades from childhood when baby Deb displaced San as the youngest and on to adulthood All through this story I kept seeing hints of Loki in Sandra's life especially the aspects I work with It's how we view life after all through the lens of our own perceptions Loki is known as the Lord of Laughter and one of His strongest lessons so oft overlooked is to laugh at life especially aspects you can't change Sometimes you get dealt suck ass hands in the game of life You can harbour bitterness and burn out uickly or you can see things for the cosmic joke it is laugh your way through it and enrich not only your own life but those around you as well Sandra also displayed another trait of the Trickster manifesting in an ability to skilfully manipulate others Then there's the potential for fiery destructiveness the darker side of Loki's energy seen in her descent to criminal activity A crippling accident changed things for Sandra marking a point where bitterness could have completely consumed her I can respect the abruptness of such tragedy and the struggle to cope with the aftermath At age 20 I lost an eye The vision in the remaining one is compromised and learning to adapt to a severe loss of independence can be trying for the patient but eually for the familyDespite the decades difference I really resonated with Konrad's observation that society overall tends to prefer those gifted in the 'hard’ sciences Like her I excelled in the creative sciences while doing well in physical sciences and decent enough in math My younger siblings overshadowed me in those areas and today I am a patent disappointment to my blood family despite being the only one in the family to attain a PhD I am an author anthropologist philosopher metaphysicist and I taught ethics cultural awareness and mythic studies for a decade none of which matter one whit to them I digress but clearly the author succeeded in touching a chord striking resonance The proper goal of authors of any stripeThe further observation that parents do their best yet come into the game with their own wounds which tend to get passed on also rang true I've been able to step back some to see the psychological wounds given me by my parents and observe how they themselves received some variation I wish schools focused on psychological skills and communications skills for both genders at a young age Perhaps these patterns of transference could be short circuitedI love the humour suffused within this touching tale Much of the story was of interest to me as an anthropologist as well This was an eye opening insight into a specific intersection between culture and time unfamiliar to me in many ways I really enjoyed the photos scattered throughout which helped bring this family to full lifeThe manuscript could do with another good proofing There were a scattering of spelling and grammar errors and times when words or phrases were repeated very close together The story is engaging enough that these are easily glossed over in the mind Getting Granny's Glasses these
