If you're looking for a general history of the western half of the American continent you might do well to pick up Gary Anderson's and Kathleen Chamberlain's Power and Promise The Changing American West You might do well to pick up just about any other book on western history though as there's relatively little here to make it distinctiveWhere Power and Promise succeeds is its thorough attention to important detail and its efforts to provide a narrative alongside all of the dates and names But that format tends to falter a little near the book's conclusion where the authors seem intent on describing every American political movement in the context of western history Describing western history this way is great contextualization for cowboy President Teddy Roosevelt or even the counterculture movement that called Berkeley and San Francisco home but the later sections tend to blur together in unfortunate ways But this is a fantastic entry level history of the west daunting sections and a disconcerting number of typos aside It is deserving of admiration also for its ambition to give a voice not only to the leaders but also the disenfranchised and pushed aside people often on whose backs the west was built and developed
