Marco and Dex are hustlers that work the casino's preying on drunken gamblers and relieving them of their wallets winnings and all What possessed them to take on a partner who knew but Dominic Donato was certainly cut different to them a wiry dangerous man with long black hair He exuded violence in almost a demonic way and he wasn't one to blend into a crowd the type of person who cut through the masses with little vigilance When things went askew Dominic took extreme measures to the limit and shot a potential witness That was now why he'd woken up after a severe beating out in the middle of nowhere on the desert floor abandoned with a new role That of bait for the vultures and various other predators of the unforgiving Mojave Desert What follows is the most unlikely of ways out a supernatural trip that will fulfil all his dreams of revenge and it all starts with a coyote To say would be to give the game away enough to say that it's well written fast paced and will appeal too many The characters certainly weren't but the premise felt a little too young adult and fantastical for me but I can be hard to pleaseAlso posted at

Mental note Make sure dude is dead before you dump him in the desert A very good short tale of revenge and mysterious powers that reside within the desert and the wildlife that call it home

Marco and Dex are petty thieves picking pockets in seedy casinos Whatever possessed them to take on a third man Dominic is beyond comprehension Not only does Dominic stick out like a sore thumb in a profession where blending in is the key to success but he has a violent edge that he never bothers to try and hide On their first job together Dominic blotches it in the worst possible way His partners not terribly bright on their own decide to beat him senseless and leave him out in the desert to dieHuge mistakeThe rest of the novella is very fast paced and details Dominic's will to survive and get vengeance on his ex partners There isn't much I can say specifically without giving away the storyline from here on out The supernatural comes into play and while I am a big fan of supernatural stories in general there just wasn't enough background on this one to make it stand out for me The characters didn't feel fully developed including Dominic and the ending felt too convenient for my tastesA fast read though with some uniue touches throughoutI received an ARC of this novella from DarkFuse in exchange for an honest review

This is the fourth story by Lisa I have read still need to read The Genesis Code The story is about two thieves named Dex Lennox and Marco Tidwell Who decide to add another man to the team A man named Dominic Donato Things go wrong on the first job so they decide to take care of the problem They beat up Dominic real bad and leave him in the desert with no phone no wallet and no water He wakes up sees nothing but sand and cactus This is when the story get going This was a well written revenge story Had a good flow and was a uick read I gave Skinshift 4 starsI received an e arc of this book from DarkFuse in exchange for an honest review

Dominic has been left for dead out in the desert by his cohorts after a simple pick pocketing job goes awry After stumbling around and drinking some funky colored water that looked like it was draining from an old mineshaft he gets attacked by a coyote He kills and eats the coyote then changes into A coyoteSkinshift is my first Lisa von Biela read and it wasn't one that I'll be jumping up and down about The writing itself is decent but the story is a basic shapeshifter tale that doesn't go anywhere The characters weren't very interesting or fleshed out Dominic seems perfectly cool with the fact that he now can change into a coyote like its the most normal thing in the world There are characters that are introduced towards the end of the story that don't serve much of a purpose much like the story 2 Glowing Animal Skulls out of 5You can also follow my reviews at the following links

uite an enjoyable read but a little too close to the werewolf theme to view this as an original and exciting novella Dominic has been left for dead in the mojave he wants revenge on those who have left him there; Marco and Dex Dominic finds that by killing certain animals and partaken of each he has now the power to become that animal whenever he wishes So he chases down the bad men and disposes of them accordingly assuming the identity of whatever animal is adeuate for the task The ending certainly allows the author to return for a second instalmentmy advice would be forget it

35I received an E arc from Darkfuse Publishing in exchange for an honest reviewDominic has been left for dead in the desert by his partners after he botched a casino robbery killing a woman in the process and therefore labelling himself a liability Dex and Marco think they have dealt with Dominic and are laying low until the commotion dies down Unfortunately for them Dominic has managed to survive against all odds and is plotting his revenge if he can get back to civilisation that isThirsty hungry and weak from the beating a chance encounter with a desert animal saves his life and puts him on a new path that will see him exact his revengeThis started off really well the pacing was fast and the characters seemed interesting although lacking in detail Around the mid way point the novella sticks with Dominic and becomes repetitive and bogged down as he encounters in the desert but each chapter is really no different to the last with him There's also some info regarding the water it being possibly poisonous and a green glow but nothing is really explained satisfactorily and I wondered why it had been includedThe end saw several new characters being added which was a little frustrating but the action picked up again and I really loved the final chapterA decent enough read but seemed too straight forward plot wise with not enough character development

SKINSHIFT is a decent enough read but not one that really struck a big chord with me The writing is good the pace is fast and there's enough action and plot developments to really keep things moving along That said it just didn't grab me in the way her previous release did which was a medical thriller titled BLOCKBUSTER The next paragraph has a few SPOILERS so read on at your own riskHere von Biela trades in the scenarios of cutting edge medicine for the desert climes of Nevada to present a paranormal revenge thriller that is brief and entertaining but which lacks sufficient depth The characters don't have much development aside from the central character a killer named Dominic but even his is scant at best The driving force behind the narrative struck me as being too uickly resolved with a finale that not only suddenly introduced a handful of new characters but that also left the climax feeling unearned and short shrifted Ultimately SKINSHIFT left me feeling a bit cold and impartial Still it was an OK read just not one that really set itself apart from the pack

This book was right in my wheelhouse given that I love supernatural stories of this variety trying not to spoil anything as well as stories set in the desert southwest This is ultimately a revenge story than a supernatural story especially given that the supernatural aspects aren't delved into uite as deeply as I might have liked But it moves at a breakneck pace and was a whole lot of funEven as short as it is there were some scenes that felt like they really added nothing to the story and I would rather have seen development of the supernatural aspects but that could be just me This was a change of pace from Lisa's previous works and I hope to see of it

Skinshift starts out as a crimerevenge thriller a man is left for dead in the desert after his partners in a heist turn on him He wakes up consumed with vengeanceThis is a hard novella to comment on with regards to plot because going much further in to the story would spoil what is coming I really enjoyed the writing and the short chapters give a sense of urgency to the reader as the pages fly by A couple of characters introduced in the latter portion aren't fully fleshed out but to do so at that point would have slowed down the momentumLisa von Biela is mostly known for her technological thrillers and this is a fun change of pace Anyone looking for a uick exciting twist on the revenge story should give this one a read 4 stars
