Ten year old Arabella Fitzgerald a pampered young girl who lives with her mother in a mansion on the Hudson River is dismayed to learn that her new stepfather intends to send her to boarding school While pouring out her troubles to her beloved cat Miranda Arabella is amazed to discover that Miranda can speak to her and that she can escape her troubles by becoming a cat But Arabella now Bella the cat soon discovers that life as a feline is not entirely problem freeWhile some of the scenes in Bella Arabella have a charm that will appeal to the cat lover the book comes recommended by Cleveland Amory I found the resolution a little pat and the tone almost preachy This tale has also been told in Eric Christian Haugaard’s picture book fairytale Princess Horrid which I prefer

I read this book when I was a kid My sister had a copy and it was a delightful story Arabella is a spoiled rich girl living in a mansion in the Hudson valley in the 1920s But she's lonely and her mother and stepfather plan to send her away to a boarding school Miranda the family cat is the only one who seems to understand her Miranda it turns out can talk to Arabella since Arabella is one of the few humans who can understand cat talk Arabella turns into a cat and from there on it's all downhill Arabella learns a thing or two as a cat She learns other people are less fortunate and even other cats can have an eually hard time just trying to survive I recommend this book for cat fanciers of all ages just for the illustrations alone

I have very vivid memories of this book that I read as I child but couldn’t remember the title forever It was also conflated in my memory with the Abandoned by Paul Gallico After rereading the Abandoned I realized that it was two different books I was recalling Must track down a copy of this now
