No recent novel does a powerful job of capturing the day to day lives of Nigerian university students than Longrin Wetten’s debut novel “Lie to me Dan”Maryln Zhasa a seventeen year old brilliant young girl meets a rogue Dan who wants to be her boyfriend at all cost Ignored and shunned Dan enlist the help of Maryln’s friend to get her attention An accident happens Dan is taken and abducted by a rival cult and things went downhill from thereI'm a bit torn writing this review Wetten is an excellent writer and I will give him that but he is not that imaginative The story is not original there are many university stories with similar plotsI still have not figured out what the over riding thrust of this book is meant to be I do not mind the lack of plot so much as the lack of focus The depiction of the romance between Maryln and Dan is cheeky and excellent but there is little context or understanding of its provenanceI recommend reading it despite its flaws as it certainly brings campus love to life and captures the dilemmas of young men and women in universities The character’s are familiar We might see ourselves in the stories We might see our friends and families in the stories or we might just see the people we have metMr Wetten created a cast of characters whose lives are so richly imagined that this deeply affecting novel calls out for a seuel or follow up that might give us insight into Dan Maryln Esse and Agent Dong’s livesLie to me Dan is dark moving and romantic story that should be read not for its love story but for the light it sheds on cultism and how it affects our youthsDespite its shortcomings this novel is worth reading for its glimpses of what happens in Nigerian universities I look forward to reading the next seriesMany thanks to the author for providing a copy of Lie to me Dan in exchange for an honest reviewRead

Marylyn Zhasa is a psychology student studying at the Saro Wiwa University She has a family who loves her and is an excellent student What could possibly go wrong? Enter Daniel Kazeh popularly called D Man pronounced to rhyme with Demon who wants to befriend her by all means Then things start to happen really fastLie to Me Dan is a very easy read which I enjoyed The book focuses on uite a number of things that makes it recommendableFirst on the list is the near perfect depiction of a Nigerian university environment Wetten does a lot of justice to this part of the book as he paints a vivid picture of the working of a typical university that is very relatable I like the way he infuses Pidgin English and slang in his book which makes it a interesting readAlso he focuses on a very big cankerworm that has eaten deep into the fabric of many Nigerian higher institutions which is cultism In Lie To Me Dan we encounter Nelson a cultist who is greatly feared on campus and is annoyingly overprotective of his diva girlfriend YvonneLovers of Dan Brown will find the use of codes puzzles and cryptic messages used in the book uite fascinating I particularly found the part where Professor Zhasa Maryln's father asks someone to pick her up captivating She asks What time is it? to which the man answers the time is now That's a very effective techniue to prevent kidnapping if you ask meMy review will not be complete if I don't talk about Professor Zhasa He is not a perfect parent but he's a competent one who doesn't make rash decisions The way he cares about his daughter consider her feelings and allows her live is heartwarmingFinally Lie To Me Dan is an easy and pleasant read If you're not bothered about the trope of university life and almost too detailed descriptions I totally recommend this bookMany thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

Sometimes the people who get to tell stories of Nigerians seem to stick with specific narratives The hustle greed anguish politics hopes for a better reality among others All seemingly doom and gloom with sprinkles of joyLife as a Nigerian always throws curve ballsYet there are people out there living existing falling in love daring to take risksThis is one of those storiesSet in the university environment Daniel the protagonist takes us on an exhilarating journey I laughed snickered cried and applauded his experience You get to feel a gamut of emotions that you don't expect a fictional pop suspense book to give especially one based in and from Nigeria There is intrigue wariness sarcasm and then of cause joyLongrin has given me a delightful reason to hope for wonderful love stories out there He also helps to throw light on the beauty that exists in our northern campuses the architecture the academia and of cause the students with their wonderful mix of time hormones ambitions and backgrounds I can't wait for

Marylyn Zhasa 300 level psychology student studious not much of an extrovert and daddy’s little princess To her men were easy to figure out and a complete waste of her time at this point in her life; that is till she meets Daniel Kazeh aka D Man the hot and mysterious playboy on campus The author takes the cliché tale of ‘the geek and the playboy’ and turns it into something exciting and entertaining Lie to me Dan is a very entertaining and educative novel that was able to address many relatable issues to modern youths Marylyn as the heroine of the story is seen as the typical good girl in class and a bit too strong headed for her own good sometimes The a little too perfect role model for girls to look up toNow Daniel on the other hand is a major character I’m certain that most ladies love already He just screams danger and hotness charming and sweet all at the same time The author goes deeper into the mind of a playboy making us see the addiction that most playboys have to getting what they want and how humbling it would be for them when they finally meet the right person for themProfessor Zhasa is another character that I just have to talk about He depicts a role model parent He’s not perfect but he always wants what is best for his daughter like every parent should but his difference was that he actually wanted Marylyn to feel comfortable with the decisions he made for her and understand his reasons for them; a trait most African parents lack these daysThis book review would be incomplete if I don’t address the major issue entwined in the book; cultism The dangers of cultism is vividly described in the book and depicted by Nelson aka Nailson who literally nailed his victims and anyone that dared to cross his part A violent character that is feared by all on the campusLie to me Dan is one of the best Nigerian novels I’ve read It’s modern relatable to all youths very entertaining and well written I would it recommend to anyone

NAME LIE TO ME DANAUTHOR LONGRIN WETTENPUBLISHER Penthusia Media LimitedPAGES 250DATE OF PUBLICATION 2013NAME OF REVIEWER OMEMU ESTHERGrab a tall glass of your favourite drink cuddle with your teddy and curl up with the new book “Lie to Me Dan” by Longrin Wetten a thrilling romance story that would have you sitting at the edge if you are a fan of thriller and romance A rather engaging plot with complicated realistic characters and just the right amount of romance The story in itself was a web of suspense scenes set out to draw in readers at every junction and keep your eyes peeled minds open and brain on alert for the next scene to come Unlike most Nigerian stories with cliché plot on colonialism slavery abuse and the basic ones we read for exams Longrin excellently offers a relatively fresh perspective that projects the average life of students in a world of adventure It had this reviewer eager to change universityAlthough the story started for this reviewer at Chapter 10 there is no arguments that the entire book was exceptional beginning with Marylyn who stole hearts with her ranging personality She was innocent with an up to standard life yet feisty stubborn and relentlessly determined It caught this reviewer by surprise when she dumped her friend Esse because she was bent to meeting danger at its best Who would have thought?Struts in the man of book Daniel or better still D man the ladies’ man that definitely broke hearts for both readers and characters His suave and charming characters hooks on first approach An unexpectedly brilliant player with lying lips and endearing personality His ordeal brought tears and maybe a little smirk Karma was at her finest The undeniable attraction between Daniel and Marylyn was noticed almost immediately predictability on the part of the writer but the totally not cliché journey to their happily ever after got the writer forgiven How sweet was reunion many winks at the airport sceneThe other characters in the book were an array of divergent personalities a rather colourful feature that earned the book another brownie point and the descriptions of each personalities was wowing It was nothing over embellished just simple and enough to have the readers live in the moment Esse was another feisty but caring lady with a smart brain and sharp lips she always had something to say and Titi was a shy difference to the other fiery hot personalities Yvonne a lady of elegance whose doom lifted lips only slightly and brought tears was a saucy one that had men wrapped around her fingers She was brave determined and strong despite her innumerable mistakes Then there was Nelson a psychotic bully if his cravings for nailing offenders was any indication Not to forget our dad of the year Professor Zhasa and his boy Agent Benjamin Dongs the only other guy that did not have loose screws The characters were few allowing the readers to easily capture every single one of them and the book in itself was not a long drag short yet captivating It was enjoyable to watch them age grow mature suffer and still find love in all that complicated mix The prologue was beautiful and though it might have been found anywhere else in the book it was the perfect suspense to keep the readers intrigued The inference to the title at one of the ending chapters did not go unnoticed It was nice and served as a reminder and explanation as to the reason behind the title for the readers The story so excellently presented could not totally escape the mistake curse for every human work on this place The book so beautifully carved still had its own could have been done better s The use of new characters to introduce old ones was a freuent occurrence in this book and as much as it was a breath of fresh air at each point it made the book seem like an anthology of sort at first glance There were no previous mention of the character so starting a chapter with someone knew could confuse the reader uick A little mention or perhaps using old characters to introduce new one might have been better for some chapters Using Emily to introduce Daniel was a little bit unnecessary or could have been done better For Mr Taofee he was partially mentioned so upon sights of him at new chapter it was easier to flow giving readers an insight as to the importance of his character This could percase be a style of writing but it could have been done better Lie to me Dan was a well sojourned journey and by journey this reviewer is hopeful that the next destination would be a thrilling romance between Agent Dongs and Esse This is not aggrandized but it is a simple perspective of a MUST READ book because if you’re looking for a reassuring dose of the familiar with a dash of the new Lie to Me Dan is the book

“Go ahead and lie to me Dan Lie to me” – Marylyn to DanielThe story set in a fictional university somewhere in the Niger delta region of Nigeria crafts a tale around two undergraduate students Marylyn Zhasa and Daniel Kazek Marylyn is a young and intelligent female with a strong opinion of what her future should be and no interest in a sexual relationship with the opposite sex Whereas Daniel is a flirtatious male well known for his various escapades with the opposite sex He is commonly referred to as D man by his male friendsDaniel a young man famous for his ability with the ladies sets his sights on Marylyn who he assumes will be an easy conuest for him Marylyn on the other hand is not impressed by his attempts to woo her especially after she finds out about his reputation as a womanizer This for the early parts of the book appears to be a clash between the unmovable object and the irresistible force Eventually Daniel is eventually able to gain the upper hand by manipulating Esse Marylyn’s close friend into aiding his attempt to get Marylyn Using his considerably deep pockets he collaborates with Esse to arrange a surprise party for Marylyn’s eighteenth birthday He uses this opportunity to disguise himself and make himself appealing to her Marylyn gets vexed upon discovery of the ploy and drives away from the scene in a hurry This leads to an unfortunate collision between her and a lecturer’s car in which she is badly injuredDaniel upon discovery of the accident is truly shocked and apologetic and begins to regret his actions He accepts the blame for the accident as he was the major instigator While she was admitted to the hospital she begins to soften up to Daniel and sees that he is not as villainous as he originally appears He visits until he is told to stay away by Marylyn’s mother after it is rumoured that he is a cult memberDaniel becomes haunted by his past sins as Yvonne a girl he attempted to have sex with breaks into his home to seduce him While resisting he is attacked by Nelson along with his fellow cultists who beat and kidnap him They carry him deep into the forest so as to teach him a lessonMarylyn begins her search for Daniel which pulls in new characters such as Agent Dongs and Nelson Her search for her new found soulmate leads to a scary bloodbath involving the death of Nelson and his goons along with Yvonne The rescue of Daniel leads to a shocking revelation about his affiliation with cults This causes a break in the relationship between the star crossed lovers as Marylyn begs him to simply lie to her; which he fails to do Marylyn leaves with her Father and prepares to exit the countryAfter further inspection it is revealed that Daniel’s association is not as extreme as it initially painted out to be and he only gave that impression for her sake Daniel is made to realize he could lose his soulmate forever and makes a shocking appearance in the airport and confesses his love to Marylyn The complete truth is revealed and the story closesAlthough it may seem to be rather odd for a romance novel it depicts a realistic love that readers can connect with as the characters are realistic The story gives meaning to its characters by giving in depth explanations to the background of the most inconseuential characters thereby giving full the reader full understanding of the role each character plays It also highlights all the major aspects of Nigerian undergraduate life by strategically describing various situations to show the various struggles inherent in university life It was a truly enthralling start to this romance trilogy
