While there are a few animals in the world that do not have mouths like the short lived Luna moth most do But not all mouths are the same Animal Mouths explores the differences that can be found in various types of animals and discusses how those adaptations help them to survive Some have teeth others have beaks bills or no teeth at all Long sharp teeth are for tearing flesh while flat teeth grind vegetation The proboscis of a butterfly is used like a straw to drink nectar from flowers but the long beak of the Robber fly is used to puncture insects and suck the liuefied insides from their prey A few other animals included in the text are weasels porcupines opossums the great egret and the milk snakeHolland uses vibrant full spread photographs and concise text to describe the animals introduced and how their mouths are adapted to suit their needs Inset photos of some animal skulls give readers a better view of the various types of teeth New vocabulary is introduced and defined in context Activities and a glossary are included to extend learning

Young scientists can learn a great deal about animals and their behavior from studying their mouths This book provides several examples of the skulls of animals that show their teeth and how they function but it also discusses how some animals have no need of mouths Lovely close up photos of various animals including birds coyotes opossums weasels and a snapping turtle allow readers to see the difference in their teeth beaks and bills and note how their teeth or mouths are designed to allow them to eat efficiently There are plenty of interesting facts that I didn't know; for instance opossums have teeth than any other mammal on our continent or that weasels have carnassial teeth that function like a pair of scissors OUCH No wonder weasels are feared by other animals Parents and teachers may find the four activity pages useful for extending what youngsters have learned in this book
