Edge of Forever

review Edge of Forever

River Glen was at the edge of nowhere a tiny sleepy town nestled on the shores of the Potomac River It was perfect for Dana Brantley who following a couple of rocky years was looking for a peaceful place to start over The townspeople had. This contemporary romance centers on a woman who has moved from a big city to a small town to get away from something The story is teasing holding out the revelation until the last possible point in the story but it is not hard to figure out Some things about it are obvious than othersDana is hard to like since she is withdrawn and jumpy pushing Nick away at every chance Nick would be the perfect guy but he is a bit chauvinistic and way too invasive The story should have been a non starter since Nick should have taken many hints and done the right thing and stayed away I can't imagine what his attraction is other than Nick having a White Knight complex He realizes that he is dealing with something serious in Dana but runs over her Not that from a broader perspective she doesn't need to have her shell removed but it is not Nick's right to make that choice The author paints his motives as being mostly pure but I think that he is lying to himselfThe tone of the story is mostly a downer Not only does it deal with a very serious and disturbing subject but any time there might be some optimism it doesn't take long for Dana to crush it Nick's son Tony could be a bridge that develops into something interesting but mostly Tony is a secondary characterI know I have said it but this book deals with a very serious and disturbing topic that has wider application in society I don't think it does that very well I have read many other stories with variations on that theme so I am comparing to this book to those stories as to how well the author draws in the reader to the problem Some of what leaves this book short is the teasing nature of the mystery The author spends so much effort giving hints yet holding back that the reader doesn't get a chance to truly empathize with Dana Something is obviously bad but without understanding it better the result is frustration than empathy Nick mirrors what the reader is feelingMature themes besides the disturbing issue there are mildly explicit sexual references and a mildly explicit sexual scene that isn't real long That brings us to the disturbing issue I thought that the way it was handled is at best clumsy and at worst exploitative The issue is view spoiler serious physical and emotional abuse of Dana by her husband Double Spoiler This leads to her killing her husband mostly in self defense Additionally Dana is persecuted by the family and later by gossip in the town The resolution was done too uickly too easily and too vaguely so we don't really get a good discussion which might lead to societal solutions Also in these stories I am never sure I believe that a woman is going to turn to sex with a new partner in the way presented in the story I admit the story went to great lengths to develop Nick as sensitive and trustworthy Forgive me because I'm male I readily admit I'm no expert in these things but I know from experience that my wife wants anything but sex when she is stressed or upset And my wife's temperament is much like Dana's Triple Spoiler Further Nick's actions going into Dana's bedroom and eventually kissing her while she is asleep is technically sexual assault It is unacceptable Dana's reaction is incredibly mild given the circumstances I don't buy it Expanding on the id Training for the New Alpinism: A Manual for the Climber as Athlete until the last possible point in the Her prim and proper reserve As he plies his considerable charm on Dana what Nick discovers is a wounded and fragile soul It will take than his usual charm to convince Dana that in River Glen and with him she has found her edge of forever. On Edge of ForeverThis was my least favorite of the two books but I still enjoyed reading about the characters Now I'm going to spoil the story just a bit because how can I review this story without doing a bit of spoiling Dana is incredibly secretive about her past which reuires Nick to tease out bits and pieces since Dana won't share anythingDana is the town librarian who clearly came to town to hide from some horrible event in her past She tries very hard to assert her independence and avoid relationships but of course the town sees her as perfect for the town bachelor Nick Verone Nick likes the mystery surrounding the librarian and wedges himself into her life rather forcefully He invites himself over enters her home and takes on fixing things without being asked I know it's the small town charm thing but it did seem a little too forceful for my tasteAs they begin falling in love her secrets come out to the town and there is a movement to remove her as librarian At the same time Nick's mother in law decides to fight for custody of Nick's son Tony due to Dana's presence For this couple it is just one hurdle after another while they fight to be in loveI enjoyed the book but I got hung up on Dana's secrecy as well as Nick's forcefulness If Dana had merely explained even a tidbit of her past then maybe Nick would have understood where she was coming from If Nick had actually listened to Dana's wishes for independence then she wouldn't have felt boxed in I get the book needs conflict but at times it seemed a little forcedI gave this book 35 stars Read as part of an anthology Managerial Decision Making usual charm to convince Dana that in River Glen and with him she has found her edge of forever.
